We can sometimes get excited to share our thoughts and ideas with others. That is great! Your team absolutely wants to hear them.
However, we need to be careful not to interrupt. Being interrupted can be frustrating and make the speaker feel like their words are not important.
So, how do we stop ourselves from blurting out our next great thought?
There are a few things to try next time you are in a conversation or meeting.
First, remember to focus on the person speaking. Really listen in hard and make sure you are hearing and understand everything they are saying. It will make your reply much more thoughtful and meaningful.
You might want to try designating a specified amount of time for each person to speak. That way, everyone gets a fair chance to provide input. Something like a 5-minute timer can help with this.
So the next time you feel like butting in, make a note of your thought, and get back to focusing on the person speaking.
